April's member spotlight is dedicated to Sarah Indyk, who completes her service term with Squirrel Hill Health Center in Pittsburgh, PA this month! Squirrel Hill Health Center has been a host site partner with HMA since 2019 and they have been incredibly grateful to have Sarah serve at their organization this year. Sarah's innovation, diligence, and ability to take initiative have made her a service superstar.
Sarah is a certified QPR instructor and has trained almost 300 participants in this suicide prevention training during her term! She has collaborated with many diverse organizations including the Latino Community Center and Bhutanese Community Association of Pittsburgh, as well as various schools, government organizations, and migrant and religious communities. Some highlights from her service term were "speaking with so many individuals who displayed such passion for their communities", and seeing people transform after the trainings she taught. Suicide prevention and mental health can bring up uncomfortable and difficult but necessary conversations; Sarah was able to field these and any questions that came her way to help participants work their way up to feeling more equipped and confident to navigate those conversations in the future.
Sarah will be serving another AmeriCorps term this summer with the Boys and Girls Club of Western PA, where she will be working with teenagers to provide professional growth opportunities during their summer break. In the fall, she will be attending the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a dual program earning her Master’s in Public Health and Social Work, working toward her goal of becoming a licensed social worker and focusing on research, policy, and non-profit foundations.
We thank Sarah for her time, energy, and dedication this year and wish her the absolute best in her future endeavors!
