A community-based approach to the national mental health crisis, this initiative utilizes evidence-based programs to train community members on how to prevent, detect and support people with mental illness. AmeriCorps members serve a full-time service term at one of our agency host sites in select locations across the nation. AmeriCorps members are trained as instructors in a mental health program designated by their host site including Mental Health First Aid, QPR, SafeTALK and other evidenced based programs. Members then certify members of the public, bolstering the community’s capacity to meet local mental health needs.

AmeriCorps Members:

  • Receive instructor certification in an evidence-based mental health training

  • Impact communities by improving outcomes for people who live with mental illness

  • Build their resume and/or application for health profession programs

Through the Public Health AmeriCorps grant, Healthy Minds Alliance is seeking AmeriCorps members to serve with crisis call centers throughout the country, to provide expanded support to meet challenges faced by these centers after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline shifted to the 3 digit number 988. AmeriCorps members are trained in evidence-informed crisis intervention and suicide prevention, to provide direct and immediate support to individuals accessing the local crisis call center’s suicide prevention calls, texts, and chats.
